Abstract

Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is widely recognized for its biological properties, mainly attributed to its high content of 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol). This study aimed to evaluate its chemical composition and its antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity by means of a literature review of previous research. The chemical composition of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil was compared with other species of the genus Eucalyptus, highlighting its higher concentration of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes with therapeutic effects. It was confirmed that 1,8-cineole is the predominant compound, responsible for inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and fungi such as Candida albicans. Likewise, its antioxidant potential was evidenced due to the presence of flavonoids and tannins. Comparison with other Eucalyptus species showed that, although they share similar compounds, their concentration varies, influencing their biological efficacy. The findings support the traditional use of Eucalyptus globulus in natural medicine and suggest its application in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. However, clinical studies are recommended to establish safe doses and to optimize its use in therapeutic treatments.
